In 1880, a German-born pioneer known as "Madame Joe" mailed a single pound of coffee, grown in her own Florida garden, to Washington, D.C. It was the first coffee ever grown on American soil. Newspapers as far away as Ceylon wrote about it like Brazil should be nervous. It never turned into an industry, but for one strange overlooked moment in 1880, a woman in a four-acre garden on Florida's Gulf Coast was the entire American coffee trade.

The Dunlawton Sugar Mill in Port Orange, built around 1830, helped produce the sugar that sweetened one of America's fastest-growing habits: coffee. As coffee became more popular across the 1800s, sugar plantations like this one supplied the ingredient that turned a bitter drink into a daily ritual for millions.
One of the coolest parts? The ruins still contain some of the original iron kettles, steam machinery, and cane press gears, making it one of the earliest surviving examples of sugar-processing equipment in the United States. Even stranger, in 1906 those same giant sugar kettles were fired up again... not for sugar, but to render oil from two beached whales. 🐋

Coffee improves with rest after roasting?
Most people would think coffee is best fresh after roasting, but thats a common misconception!!Depending on the coffees processing method, the origin, and the roast level theres a "sweet spot" where the coffee reaches its peak flavors.Some general rules of thumb are the lighter the roast the longer it takes to reach its peak, typically 2-4 weeks. While a darker roast could reach its peak within a few days!We have specific roast days, with shipments following 1-2 days later. Roast dates will be on the bags for the consumer to decide how long they like their coffee to rest.
